Cavities form when the bacteria in your mouth bloom as a result of residual food particles, sugars and plaque that are not removed by twice-daily brushing and flossing. If it is caught early, and the cavity is still modest in size, a Arnold H. Brokstein, DDS dentist can usually repair it with a basic filling.
The type of material your dentist recommends for your filling will be based on the size and location of the filling, and its visibility in your smile.
Most people prefer to receive a filling by first having the dentist numb the general area of their mouth by injecting Novocain. This generally numbs the tooth and surrounding area of the mouth just long enough to complete the filling treatment.
The dentist will then use a drill to remove any decayed enamel on the tooth. This ensures that no bacteria exist in the cavity. The filling can then be applied to the area.
Composite resin and amalgam fillings can be seated into the clean cavity in a single appointment. Gold and porcelain fillings need to be custom made in an off site dental lab. If either of these types of fillings are called for, the dentist will apply a temporary filling to the cavity. When the final filling is ready, we will call you back in for a follow up appointment to cement it in place.
With twice daily brushing and flossing the filling should repair the full function and appearance of the tooth for many years to come.
If you suspect a filling has started to form on one of your teeth, you should not delay in contacting Arnold H. Brokstein, DDS’s office in Oakland, California at 510-482-5700 to schedule an appointment.
